Why it’s Difficult to Speak English Despite Knowing Grammar Rules

englishspeaking1

The approach followed in schools and English language institutes is to teach grammar rules first. Students mug up grammar rules from textbooks and feel that they have successfully learnt English language, which is true to some extent. But some of us still find it difficult to speak English despite knowing grammar rules .

Why does that happen? Let’s find out!

Different Aspects of Language

The two different aspects of language are:

  1. Writing
  2. Speaking

The first one can be mastered easily if one is aware of English grammar rules. It ensures that the student can write well and get good grades.

The second aspect, however, is a little more important from career point of view. Good Spoken English skills and fluency ensure good jobs and interpersonal skills.

What is the difference between the two?

Writing is a comparatively slower process. We have time to think, plan and then write. We can carefully select our words, apply the rules and then give an answer. This is why it easier to score in exams rather than have a conversation with another person.

Speaking is a more spontaneous process. We need to give replies in real time and there is no time to sit and ponder over which tense to use. Hence, most learners fail when it comes to speaking English.

Why it’s Difficult to Speak English Despite Knowing Grammar Rules

Knowledge of grammar rules does not ensure fluency in English. Fluency comes with speaking practice. Schools and institutes teach from textbooks and exposure to speak is not provided. This results in hesitation. Learners are unable to think of appropriate words to express themselves, go blank or feel shy to speak in front of others.

This can be a major setback in terms of getting a job or going abroad for higher studies. Dealing with international clients can also become difficult for entrepreneurs.

Not just that, all these factors can eventually lead to an inferiority complex in the individual.

So, what is the solution?

Practice! Practice speaking English as much as you can. If you’re looking for ways to practice English, our blog’s here for you.
